Green Route
The natural path –or green channel– of the River Muga
The natural course of the River Muga runs alongside the left bank of the river, connecting the historic center of Castelló d’Empúries with the urban area of Empuriabrava. The path is 5km long and adequate for pedestrians or any form of non motorized transport. It is divided into two levels, for cyclists and pedestrians on one level, and for horses on the other.
One of the main aspects of this path is that the Muga river and its bank can be closely observed, providing a privileged glimpse of river life and its associated ecosystems: the islands and sandy areas with bird life, the riverside forests dominated by willows, ashes, alders, poplars, and black poplars, fauna that uses the river course as a means to move from one place to another.
Half way along the path is a wooden bridge which crosses the Muga providing access into the Aiguamolls Natural Park. Located next to the Emmpuriabrava purifying plant is the Europa pond, with a variety of observatories for bird watching. The path leads to el Cortalet, an information center for the protected area, and from where a variety of other interesting routes can be taken to observe the countryside, and the flora and fauna.
The last 2.5 kilometers of the path, before reaching the sea, run alongside the urban area of Empuriabrava where care has been taken to incorporate native and riverside vegetation. The path is an enjoyable way to see the different, yet complementary, realities of the Costa Brava united. On one side the historic and traditional centers and on the other the more recently created recreational and residential areas.
